The lungs are one of the largest organs in the body and one of the most vital organs.

Your body needs an optimal level of oxygen to operate efficiently; anything less than 94% burdens the body and complicates other organs.  The average lung capacity is 6 liters of air.  Athletes, such as an Olympic swimmer, can have twice the capacity at 12 liters.  According to the American Lung Association, adults typically take 15 to 20 breaths a minute, and about 20,000 breaths a day.

The environment and unhealthy habits like poor diet and smoking clog the breathing process with external substances that don’t belong there.  The American Cancer Society estimates 135,720 will die from lung cancer in 2020; most all from smoking including second hand smoke with 228,820 more new cases in 2020.  In fact, lung cancer is 25% of all deaths from cancer!

Each year, more people die from lung cancer than those that die from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.  Lung cancer occurs in older people generally over 60, after years of abusing their lungs with smoking or living in a hostile environment.  Just think, if one had protected their lungs earlier in life, they could be having a better quality of life today.  Impaired lungs are like suffocating. Stop smoking!

Another 15 million people have COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), a debilitating disease that restricts your breathing.  The CDC says that 9 million adults a year are diagnosed with chronic bronchitis and 3.8 million with emphysema.  There are more than 923,000 visits to the emergency departments in addition to the 5.7 million doctor office visits.  These diseases are the fourth leading cause of death in the USA resulting in 149,050 deaths.  Many of these can be prevented or treated – take the prevention route.
